Aging of Asphalt Shingles
Today I want to discuss the aging process of shingles. I am looking at an organic 3-tab shingle. The color on this is a rustic cedar which is really just a tan color. You can see how some of the granules have come off, exposing the asphalt underneath. The purpose of the granules is to protect the asphalt from the ultraviolet rays of the sun. You can see how the exposed asphalt breaks down and deteriorates with no protection. When looking at a roof where multiple shingles have begun to deteriorate you can see how they begin to curve up and become concave and how water would tend to pool in the center of those shingles. If you look in the gutter, you will see that the granules have most likely ended up in your gutters. If you see granules in your gutter, see any deterioration of your shingles or granules coming off your shingles give Far West roofing in Salt Lake city a call. We will come out and look at your roof, tell you how much longer it will last and also provide you with an estimate on a roof repair or an estimate on a new roof to protect your home to prevent major damage in the future.
